Trump is a boon for terrorism
For a change, there is a president who is fulfilling the promises he made before his election. Indeed, the very promises that you would have thought should have costed him the election. Of course I’m talking about Donald Trump, who made all the wrong promises but won the race to The White House.
The World At Home : Charles Laffiteau's Bigger Picture
In contrast to some of his other cabinet appointments, US President Donald Trump’s choices to run our country’s intelligence, national security and defence establishments all possessed the kind of government and military experience that one would expect the leaders of these key organisations to have. However, even though Trump’s top foreign policy choice has no such experience, I actually think Rex Tillerson may turn out to be one of the most inspired cabinet selections.
Change in the air for African politics
In early December, Ghanaians voted out President John Dramani Mahama, who became leader following the death of John Atta Mills in 2012, and who failed to live up to his promises throughout a four-year tenure characterised by dwindling economic fortunes and rising corruption. His upcoming replacement by 72-year-old Nana Akufo-Addo, a human rights lawyer who won 53.8 per cent of the votes, is being viewed as part of a movement in the continent.
Charles Laffiteau's Bigger Picture
Donald Trump won the US presidential election because he succeeded in feeding the same unrealistic expectations of mature white voters with lower levels of education that Michael Gove, Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage stoked in order to persuade their British counterparts to vote for Brexit. Both Trump and the Brexit champions blamed the declining economic fortunes of their countries’ blue-collar workers on immigration and companies shifting manufacturing jobs abroad
Never trumped again
It’s cliché to say that this year’s US presidential election was historic. The responsibilities shouldered by America’s chief executive, from going to war to guiding one of the world’s largest economies, make every presidential election inherently significant.
