Since Our Previous edition, Metro Éireann has become aware of four more immigrant candidates who contested the General Election.

This brings to six the total number of candidates of non-Irish background, all of whom contested as Independents.

They include Mohammad Kamal Uddin and Sheikh Mohiuddin Ahmed, both from Bangladesh.

Uddin, who lives in Castlebar, previously ran for a local election seat in Mayo in 2014, while Ahmed, president of the Irish National Minority Council, stood for a Dáil seat in the Waterford constituency.

The other two are Ennis-based economic policy consultant and first-time candidate Andre Sibo Hakizimana, from Rwanda, who ran in Clare, and American-born outgoing Senator Katherine Zappone, who contested in Dublin South-West.

As previously reported, Nigerian-born Patrick Akpoveta contested in Dublin Mid-West, after being unsuccessful in 2014’s local elections, while Canadian international law expert Dr Roslyn Fuller contested for a seat in Dublin Fingal.
