‘Youths: set an example’ was the theme of this year’s African Chaplaincy youth convention, hosted by the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin recently.

The meeting is one way in which the new chaplaincy aims to develop its youth ministry and faith development for young people in the capital’s immigrant communities.

Addressing the two-day summit, which met at Castleknock College and at a Mass at St Peter’s Church in Phibsborough, Fr Cornelius Nwaogwugwu – chaplain of the African Chaplaincy – urged the more than 250 participants to live a purposeful life.

Quoting from St Paul’s letter to Timothy, he said: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 

He also urged listeners never to “let circumstances, events, or other people tell you [that] you can’t do something good. Just don’t give up in doing good things.

“Be proud of your identity. Be proud of who you are as a Catholic. Be courageous in practicing your Catholic faith. Bear witness and spread the Good News to all people.”

Fr Nwaogwugwu also reminded the youths of the need to support their parents who“have done their best”.
