Jennifer Carroll from Ballyclare, Co Offaly – a single mum of two whose children inherited her rare brittle-bone genetic disorder – has been named Ireland’s Carer of the Year, while Donagh O’ Sullivan (12) from Cork, who cares for his autistic younger brother Diarmuid, is Ireland’s Young Carer of the Year for 2015.

They were among 22 family carers from across Ireland recognised at the ninth Carers of the Year Awards in Dublin recently, presented by broadcasters and patrons of The Carers Association, Mary Kennedy and Marty Whelan.

Hosted by The Carers Association and sponsored by Tunstall Emergency Response, the awards celebrate the dedication and commitment of Ireland’s 187,000 family carers and 6,500 young carers.
