The annual New Yam Festival celebrated by the Nigerian Igbos around the world during the harvest season was hosted again in Dublin recently. The Iriji Ndigbo event was attended by hundreds of Igbo nationals resident in Dublin and surrounding areas, as well as the chargé d’affaires at the Nigerian Embassy, Olusola Iginla, among other various dignitaries.

Highlight of this years event was the offering of prayers and appreciation by the onyendu – or president – of the Igbo Union Dublin, Gregory Umeh, to Chukwu Okike (God) for a bountiful harvest, protection and sundry blessings on the Igbos and their host country.

The crowd then tucked into their yams, traditionally roasted and dipped in palm oil, in appreciation for the harvest.
