Several ‘New Irish’ and ethnic minority candidates were elected in Ireland’s recent local council polls.

The successful candidates include four who ran on the Fine Gael ticket, and one each for Fianna Fail, Labour, the Green Party and People Before Profit.

Two of the Fine Gael’s winners are Indian-born Baby Pereppadan in Tallaght South (South Dublin County Council), and Punam Rane who was elected in the Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart local electoral area to Fingal County Council.

The remaining two are Bangladeshi-born Kazi Ahmed elected in the Glencullen-Sandyford local electoral area to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, and Yemi Adenuga, originally from Nigeria, who was elected in the Navan constituency of the Meath County Council.

Limerick’s first Bangladeshi-born Muslim councillor and first-time Fianna Fáil candidate, Abul Kalam Azad Talukder, was elected in the Limerick City West local electoral area.

Born in Ireland to Chinese parents, Hazel Chu topped the polls in the Pembroke district for Dublin City Council with 4,069 first-reference votes.

Also with the Green Party, Sophie Nicoullaud was elected in the Ballyfermot-Drimnagh LEA

They join two re-elected ‘New Irish’ councillors. One is Moldovan-born Elena Secas, who retained her seat in the Limerick City East constituency of Limerick County Council.

And Swedish-born Madeline Johansson, who was formerly co-opted to replace Gino Kenny when he was elected a TD in 2016, was elected for Solidarity-People Before Profit in the Palmerstown-Fonthill area to South Dublin County Council.
