The investigation continues into the death of an immigrant taxi driver in Dublin earlier.

Nigerian-born Moses Ebohon Ikpefua, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at St James’ Hospital where he was brought by ambulance after being found unconscious about 4.30am on nearby James’s Street on Sunday 4 February.

In an exclusive interview with Metro Éireann in their Saggart home, several members of Ikpefua said that, contrary to media reports, they believe he actually died after a robbery incident in his taxi.

The family is also critical of the manner in which gardaí broke the news to Ikpefua’s wife, describing it as “unprofessional”.

Ikpefua’s four young children were within earshot when two gardaí visited the family home to inform of his death. The family said the children were crying as their mother collapsed upon the news. Recovering some time later, she was taken to the hospital to formally identify her late husband’s body.

The family told Metro Éireann that they wonder whether this is how gardaí normally break such tragic news to families. “There was no care about the kids who were crying,” they added.

Gardaí would not comment on the case nor the family’s comments, but Metro Éireann understands they looking at a number of individuals in relation to the case. No arrests have so far been made as of press time.

Meanwhile, Ikpefua’s family said they are making plans to send his remains back to Nigeria for burial.

Results of a post-mortem have not been released for operational reasons but a file is being prepared for the coroner. Anyone with any information relevant to the incident should contact Kevin Street Garda Station at 01 666 9400 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
