Tallaght wants to honour its ‘unsung heroes’

A CALL has been launched for nominations to the Tallaght Person of the Year Awards 2008.

Patricia Bryan, chairperson of Tallaght Community Council, officially launched this year’s awards, which will take place on 21 November at the Plaza Hotel in Tallaght.

In launching the event, Bryan indicated the importance of these awards in recognising those unsung heroes who work tirelessly in their communities and who deserve to be recognised by their peers for their commitment and dedication.

The Tallaght Person of the Year Awards is one of Tallaght’s most important events. Each year, the people of the southwest Dublin region have the opportunity to nominate and acknowledge the achievements and contributions made by individuals, community organisations and local businesses under various categories with one being selected as the overall winner.

The event attracts much interest both locally and nationally, and this year is particularly special as the awards enter their 25th year. Nomination forms can be obtained from the courtesy desk at The Square in Tallaght and must be returned completed by the closing date of 10 November 2008. An independent judging panel will then have the hard task of going through the nominations and selecting the eventual category winners.

Bryan stated: “The whole process of seeking nominations, being nominated and winning an award very much assists and encourages individuals and organisations to take pride in the work which they undertake within their communities.”

She also wished to acknowledge the kind support and generous sponsorship provided by local businesses and organisations. The various award categories are as follows: Arts and Culture (including Music and Drama); Business; The Garda Sergeant Andrew Callanan Community Award (including Residents Associations and Senior Citizens); Disabled and Carers; The Michael Dooley Environmental Award; Sport; Youth; Tallaght Heart of Gold (in memory of Brian Smyth); and the overall Tallaght Person of the Year award.
