Sad times bring fond memories
A few weeks ago, my father’s youngest sister, whom I liked very much, passed away, exactly two months after their own father died at the ripe age of 100. Considering her state, from what I was told, two more months was a long time to live.
North Korean despot’s days are numbered
The majority of North Koreans would no doubt prefer to live a normal life with all the rights their neighbours to the south take for granted. Right now, such ideas are only that: ideas. But going by the predictions of some of the country’s defectors, there is hope that this will one day be a reality.
Dealing with a difficult boss
Over the Christmas break I was chatting through the family WhatsApp group to a relative, my mom’s cousin who is a live-in domestic worker back in Johannesburg. It’s a great feeling to be connected to some relations I haven’t seen since I was in secondary school.
Change in the air for African politics
In early December, Ghanaians voted out President John Dramani Mahama, who became leader following the death of John Atta Mills in 2012, and who failed to live up to his promises throughout a four-year tenure characterised by dwindling economic fortunes and rising corruption. Deportations due to rise in coming months
Speculation is rife that deportation of immigrants who have exhausted all avenues to enable them live legally in the State would rise in 2017 – following the move by the Department of Justice to adopt a proactive approach to deportation.
Time to take action for World Aids Day
The first of December is World Aids Day, when the global community reflects on the story and impact of this extraordinary pandemic. Over the past 35 years, lives have been lost, treatments have emerged that have saved the lives of millions, stigma and discrimination have remained powerful and prevalent and courage has abounded among people living with HIV. All regions of the world have been impacted, no less than the countries of sub-Saharan Africa, where two-thirds of those living with HIV reside.
English speakers live under cosh in Cameroon
At least one person was killed and many others injured as Cameroon was engulfed by violent protests over several days last month over the use of the French language in courts and schools in English-speaking parts of the west African country.

Part 27: The path least travelled (part 5)
Just because we don’t know that something exists does not necessarily mean that it is not actually there. Indeed, our three friends have discovered that the three earlier travellers, who had been presumed lost, are alive and well.
